Pace Penguin

Children's Ski Safety Program

Parents

Parents, Guardians and Little Penguins

We want families to have a fun, safe day on the slopes. That’s why we developed the Pace Penguin program. Your child will learn the Alpine Responsibility Code and other skiers/snowboarders will be reminded to give your child space and slow down around them. At participating resorts young children receive a special, bright Pace bib to wear, so everyone will recognize them as young skiers/snowboarders.

DOES YOUR CHILD HAVE A PROPER FITTING SNOW SPORT HELMET THAT MEETS ASTM, SNELL OR CEN STANDARDS?

HINT»
It should comfortably fit your child, sitting just above their eyebrows without and gaping or excessive movement.

HAS YOUR CHILD’S EQUIPMENT BEEN INSPECTED BY A TECHNICIAN THIS MONTH?

HINT»
As your child grows and develops new skills, their equipment needs change drastically—especially their binding settings. If you have any questions, ask a resort technician for help.

HAVE YOU REVIEWED THE ALPINE RESPONSIBILITY CODE WITH YOUR CHILD?

HINT»
Have fun with it! Make it a game and they will remember these 10 important rules.

DO YOU AND YOUR CHILD KNOW HOW TO RIDE A SKI
 LIFT SAFELY?

HINT»
As riders, we have the important role of learning and demonstrating safe behaviour on ski lifts. If unsure of what to do, don’t be shy! Ask a lift attendant or ski instructor for help before attempting to ride a lift.

ARE YOU COMFORTABLE SKIING/SNOWBOARDING ALONE WITH YOUR CHILD?

HINT»
If not, consider taking a parent/child program. You’ll both safely learn new skills and have fun together.

HAS YOUR CHILD TAKEN LESSONS RECENTLY?

HINT»
Frequent professional lessons are an excellent way to teach and reinforce skill and safety.

ARE THEY DRESSED APPROPRIATELY FOR THE WEATHER?

HINT»
Children feel the cold and heat much earlier than adults do. Dressing in layers allows them to adapt throughout the day. Goggles and sunscreen are also important.

HAVE YOU EVALUATED THE SNOW/WEATHER CONDITIONS WITH YOUR CHILD?

HINT»
What might have been an easy run yesterday may be faster and more challenging today. So review the conditions and plan accordingly.

HAVE YOU PLANNED YOUR ROUTE?

HINT»
Plan ahead. Start off with runs below your child’s ability and move up as you both warm up.

ARE THEY HAPPY, FED AND RESTED?

HINT»
Happy kids are happy skiers! Take frequent breaks throughout the day and know when to call it a day—every little penguin loves hot chocolate!

“I believe the program had a very positive impact on our guests’ perception of our resort, this was illustrated through multiple conversations I had with parents and children while interacting with them during lesson times. Travelling around the school area with “PACE” opened the door to conversation about the program, our risk initiatives and overall resort safety.”
